2009 Holiday Food Program of the Kiwanis Clubs of Division 34
Kiwanians respond throughout the year to the needs of the community and every year during the cold months of the holidays, we come together in a concerted effort to help provide food where needed. Some years we focus on supermarkets, giving the opportunity for shoppers to give canned food, turkeys and cash. This year we tried a new approach....
The plan to leverage funds worked. A local wholesale food supplier not only extended their pricing at cost, but is also contributing additional food as well as a personal contribution. A few Kiwanians personally committed to bridge any gap in funds to insure that St. Anthony's Dining Room received enough food from the Virtual Food Drive to feed the entire dining room on Thanksgiving, Friday Saturday and the following week.
Hands On Service and Virtual Food Drive
Hands On Service--This fall we are working with St. Vincent de Paul to volunteers directly with a food kitchen and food distribution center. Members will experience “front-line” efforts to serve or distribute food directly to the hungry.
A Virtual Food Drive--Contributions will leverage bulk buying relationships to supply much needed food to food kitchens and the hungry in our communities, maximizing the purchasing power of donations.
The "Virtual" Food Drive is not meant to replace any food collection efforts already in place, but we believe that those who may be willing to pay retail prices for small cans of food will appreciate the larger quantity of food their dollar can leverage with bulk purchasing relationships with vendors. We can procure larger quantities with existing purchasing contracts. Donors will appreciate as well the ability to make contributions directly to a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization allowing for possible tax benefits.
Thank you for helping to provide food to the hungry this year.
